History and Legacy

Woodlands was originally set up as East India Clinic, the first private hospital in eastern India, a year before India gained its independence. Riordan Hospital and The Elgin Road Nursing Home were merged to form East India Clinic, providing more space to care for a growing European patient base and to accommodate advanced European medical equipment.

At the time of independence, British doctors and nurses began leaving India. Woodlands overcame this by successfully addressing staffing challenges and ensuring continuity of medical care.

Evolution

It started as a birthing centre for Caucasian women and has grown into a leading quaternary care hospital. Over the years, it has upgraded its infrastructure, adopted advanced technology, and expanded its range of specialised treatments.

Primary Target Audience

Everyone in Kolkata and the neighbouring countries of the eastern region can access Woodlands Hospital. Within the city, most patients come from Howrah, as well as North and South Kolkata, due to the hospital’s location.

Woodlands Hospital is in the process of setting up Wellness Clinics in several locations, including Agartala (Tripura) and Howrah. These clinics will serve as centres in underserved areas, where doctors from Woodlands will hold regular OPD consultations to extend the hospital’s services to the local population.
