Woodlands was originally set up as East India Clinic, the first private hospital in eastern India, a year before India gained its independence. Riordan Hospital and The Elgin Road Nursing Home were merged to form East India Clinic, providing more space to care for a growing European patient base and to accommodate advanced European medical equipment.
At the time of independence, British doctors and nurses began leaving India. Woodlands overcame this by successfully addressing staffing challenges and ensuring continuity of medical care.
It started as a birthing centre for Caucasian women and has grown into a leading quaternary care hospital. Over the years, it has upgraded its infrastructure, adopted advanced technology, and expanded its range of specialised treatments.
Everyone in Kolkata and the neighbouring countries of the eastern region can access Woodlands Hospital. Within the city, most patients come from Howrah, as well as North and South Kolkata, due to the hospital’s location.

A structured feedback system ensures continuous improvement. Patients rate services via the CEMPIA app, covering areas such as admission, emergency care, nursing, diagnostics, housekeeping, and billing. Concerns are addressed by the respective HODs, who personally follow up. Additionally, patients have 24/7 direct access to senior management for immediate issue resolution.
